Overview

In 1965, a thirty-something Los Angeles grocer named Joe Coulombe was told he was finished. The company that owned 7-Eleven was moving into his market, and it had just bought the business that supplied his capital. The giant was coming, and it held the rope. Coulombe did not fight it. He did the opposite of everything it did.

That contrarian bet became Trader Joe’s: fewer products instead of more, deep private label instead of national brands, a text-heavy newsletter called the Fearless Flyer instead of advertising, and cheap great wine that built a cult on a teacher’s salary. He built the store for the people the giant was too big to see. The overeducated and underpaid.

This is the story of how you beat a giant by refusing to compete with it. From Pronto Markets to the first Trader Joe’s in South Pasadena in 1967, to the 1979 sale to Aldi’s reclusive Theo Albrecht, to a legacy the big chains still cannot copy.
