The story

Joe Coulombe converted his Pronto Markets convenience stores into the first Trader Joe’s in 1967 in Pasadena, California. He designed the store as the opposite of a large supermarket: small footprint, curated selection, and a nautical theme.

The chain leaned heavily on private-label goods, which let it control quality and price while keeping the assortment tight. The German company Aldi Nord acquired Trader Joe’s in 1979, and it has remained privately held since.
